Darkman is Suspense and Action
My Darkman Blu-ray came in from Shout Factory yesterday, so me and my friends decided we'd watch it today. None of us had ever seen it, but it turns out it's a really awesome movie. More of my thoughts on the movie inside.
This Sam Raimi movie from 1990 comes a few years before one of his most well-known movies, Army of Darkness. It stars Liam Neeson as Peyton Westlake, a scientist who's working on developing synthetic skin, but is finding trouble when the synthetics can only last up to 100 minutes under contact with any type of light. He soon finds himself going against a criminal group after they beat him up and leave his face burned beyond repair.
Even his girlfriend in the movie, Frances McDormand won't give the now deformed and bandaged Peyton a break, granted she thought he was dead. What comes next is the now Darkman taking vengeance upon this group of criminals, and at the same time, creating new replications of their faces and hands to wear over his, but they still only last 100 minutes in light.
The result of the burning has not only left Peyton with no reception to pain or any type of outer feeling, but also raised his emotional responses to intense levels. Throughout the movie, Darkman is essentially over-emotional with things, crying, yelling, and all kinds of other responses. He's also very calculating, almost playing out situations before they happen in intense sequences.
Darkman is a cool vigilante movie that takes a lot of elements from other movies and makes something completely different out of it. It's a great movie for pretty much anyone, too, because it's not overly full of action and it's not too superhero-ish. It's more like Batman and Green Arrow, but a little more violent and with a different type of anti-hero. The performances are great, the story is fun, and Darkman as a whole, is a really cool movie and I'm glad I finally got to see it.
