Captain Phillips is Full of Tension

Every now and then, UCLA's campus events commission puts on a free movie night, whether it's for a early screening of an upcoming movie, or a really good, really recent movie. Last time, it was an early screening of Saving Mr. Banks. This time, Tom Hanks, once more in Captain Phillips. Read on for some thoughts.

First and foremost, I've got to hand it to Tom Hanks, this is an incredible performance as Captain Richard Phillips, whose ship was stormed by Somalian pirates. He cares deeply for his crew, and devises a way to protect them. From the trailers, we had a good, clear thought of what might be happening in this movie.

But you'd be so wrong. The trailers don't really tell you anything, so, props, trailers for this movie. Captain Phillips is full of tension, and exciting to the very last minute. I won't give away huge details in this post and ruin the movie, but man, this is a good movie.

The pirates themselves are also crazy, the performances here are absolutely insane, and Barkhad Abdi totally deserved his Golden Globe nomination, and I wouldn't be surprised if there was an Oscar nomination in this for him as well. And one for Tom Hanks, too. Abdi's Muse is a frightening character that refuses to be set up or tricked, and his crew is comprised of him, a ship steerer, a young boy, and an extremely angry brute who is pretty scary. The acting here is absolutely great.

The movie is an emotional drama from start to finish. It's probably one of the more intense movies I've seen in a while. I'd definitely recommend Captain Phillips for anyone ready to be on the edge of their seats for a few hours. Wonderful movie.
