KILL la KILL and Epic Anime

Last year, KILL la KILL, a new anime from Trigger, premiered. The show recently began the second half, and it's a show that started out turned up to eleven. Here's a post about it and some other awesome, crazy anime shows that can appeal to anyone.

KILL la KILL is one of those shows where you just have to accept that it's absolutely ridiculous, and when you do, you'll have a lot more fun with it. The show is about Ryuko Matoi who is searching for clues relating to the death of her father. The academy she transfers to is insane and ruled by the ruthless Satsuki Kiryuin. The series revolves around Goku Uniforms, which are clothes that give the user superhuman powers. The first half of the show has largely revolved around Matoi fighting against members of various clubs wearing special uniforms.

Her uniform itself is also a character in the show, Senketsu. Matoi's the only one that can hear him, so her adoptive family, the Mankanshokus, think she doesn't really have any friends, but are very warm and accepting towards her and her "weirdness," even though they're the weird ones. Their daughter, Mako is Matoi's best friend and is also kind of an airhead, but really cares for Matoi.

The villains are equally as cool as Matoi in this. The primary villains, under Kiryuin are known as the "Elite 4," like in Pokemon, and they consist of some rather interesting villains, my favorite of which being Nonon, who regulates the school's non-athletic clubs. The fights with these characters and others, however, are overshadowed by the intense fights between Matoi and Kiryuin and Matoi and a newer character, Nui Harime.

There's a lot to KILL la KILL, and you'd have to experience it for yourself to get all of what is has to offer out of it. The animation is crazy, the fights are fast-paced and intense, and the show itself is a lot of fun. Definitely my pick for last season, and continuing strong into this season. It's pretty popular, as well.

So now that I've given some exposure to the most popular current, epic anime, it's time to look back at some other shows that are epic.

Code Geass

I never put Code Geass on any of my top anime lists or top show lists for one reason. It's the fact that I really have not found anything in anime that I've gotten more pure enjoyment out of, and I just don't feel like including it on any top lists or favorite lists anymore. Code Geass is 50 episodes of pure fun. The characters are colorful and cool, and the mech design and fights are some of the best I've seen. The concept and story itself are highly ridiculous, but I think that's part of the charm. This is a series that gets so epic that you get chills. It starts so small, but by the end, the whole world is watching. Code Geass is some seriously good stuff. It's also what solidified my love for anime and got me started on posting on the internet.

Neon Genesis Evangelion

If you don't want to sit through a 26-episode series about an unstable young boy piloting a giant robot, then at least watch the new movie series. Evangelion's been part of anime culture for years now, and it just doesn't get old. It's a psychological and emotional show that pushes the limits of what one young boy and his new friends can do, as fierce monsters known as "Angels" threaten Earth. It's hard to explain Evangelion in detail; it needs to be seen by anyone who dare call themselves an anime fan.

Tengen Toppa Gurren Lagann

This is probably the most epic thing you'll ever see. A boy starts in an underground village, people are scared or don't believe in the surface. The surface is reached. Then things just start expanding and expanding, and growing and growing, until the show's very last breath. There's no way to describe just how vast the world of Gurren Lagann is. It's a huge show that takes the concepts of small beginnings and does more with it than anything else ever has. Just picture throwing a galaxy around as a weapon for a second.

So there's some epic shows you should check out that are all fairly older shows, as well as KILL la KILL which is currently airing. The other three have English dubs, so if you're not a fan of subtitles, you can check those out pretty easily! I'd recommend every single one a thousand times over.
