My Top 14 Movies of 2013 Part 1

I have seen a grand total of 26 movies released theatrically in 2013. That means this is the hardest top 10 list I've ever done. So hard, in fact, that I'm making it a top 14 instead. That means there's still 12 movies that won't be on this list. Crazy. Read on for #14-8.

#14: Oblivion

Jack (Tom Cruise) and Victoria (Andrea Riseborough) are the Earth's last remaining maintenance crew for drones. The Scavs have taken over what's left of the planet, and all other humans have made the migration to the space station, the Tet. Or so they believe. Morgan Freeman also has a small, but significant role in the film. Definitely worth a watch for sci-fi fans or people who liked Tron: Legacy, the director's previous effort.

#13: Now You See Me

The weird thing about this movie is that the card trick in the beginning got me. The movie's about magicians who basically rob banks, as the trailer's spelled out for you. What they didn't spell out is that this is for a reason. The ensemble cast each provides a different element of magic goodness, with one almighty twist to end them all. If this was a "top twist of the year list," this might be number one. But as far as a good cast goes, this may be tied with American Hustle for the best ensemble of the year.

#12: Thor: The Dark World

Tom Hiddleston stole the show as Loki, but I'm pretty sure everyone knew that going into this after The Avengers. Basically, Thor is back, fighting the Dark Elves and breaking stuff. The best part? The final fight, it was basically Portal: The Movie. I've reduced this movie "Thortal" and so it shall be known. It's a great movie, though, nothing too deep.

#11: Pacific Rim

Now for something not deep at all. Pacific Rim never intended to have an Earth-shattering story, it intended to be robots hitting other robots in glorious IMAX. And it was. This is the type of movie you watch with a friend with the loudest speakers possible. The CGI is awesome, and del Toro's love letter to mecha anime prevails.

#10: The Wolverine

Hugh Jackman once again plays Logan in this trip to Japan. It's got more of a complex and deep story than recent superhero movies, but isn't afraid to have huge action set pieces. Logan travels Japan protecting Mariko, the granddaughter of a man he saved from the atomic bomb during World War II, who's being targeted, or so he thinks. The Wolverine himself is a target in a plot to make him mortal once and for all. Also the post-credits scene. My God, Days of Future Past is going to be awesome this year.

#9: Evil Dead

I saw this with one of my best friends, and I'm glad I did, because Evil Dead does not mess around. In this franchise reboot, Jane Levy (main chick in Suburgatory) plays Mia, who is possessed by a dark force and wrecks havoc on a cabin she and her brother and friends are staying at. It's got a little more to it than I'm explaining, but that's incentive to go watch the movie. It's over-the-top violent, and not for the squeamish. This isn't one of those lousy horror efforts, by the way. This movie's absolutely frightening, but also action-packed and crazy cool.

#8: Elysium

I wasn't expecting Elysium to be as harsh of a movie, going off the trailers, but this was a harsh movie. All of Earth's healthy and wealthy live on Elysium, paradise off Earth, with no sickness, and no worries. Max (Matt Damon) wants to get there, though, with the love of his life and her daughter. There's cruel politicians and mad men standing in his way, though. Some of the best CGI ever blended together with brutal action makes Elysium one of the best movies of the year.

Come back tomorrow for #7-1, some honorable mentions, and some dishonorable mentions.
